Hasher, L., & Thomas, H. (1973). A developmental study of retention. Developmental Psychology, 9, 281. Abstract Children, 3,6, and 9 years of age, learned a list of paired associates to a criterion of six out of eight correct. Retention of the pairs was tested for half the children at each age immediately after the end of learning and for the other half, one week later. Contrary to findings in the animal-memory literature, and in substantial agreement with earlier findings in human memory, young children did not forget more of what they learned than did older children.
