Abstract

In contemporary cognitive literature, the term automatic has a number of definitions (e.g., Shiffrin, in press). For the most part, these definitions are not contradictory but complementary to one another. That is, there is significant commonality among them, with the differences arising mainly from the association of the various definitions with research in different cognitive domains. However, mismatches of concerns can occur when different views of authomaticity are juxtaposed. Fisk's comment (this issue, pp. 215-216) presents such a mismatch on the topic of methodological problems in the study of automaticity.
